Sri Lanka, amazing island located south from India, boasts almost 1,600 kilometers of sandy beaches, which attracts tourists from around the world ages. I was lucky enought and had a chance to visit this island this year. Our Sri Lanka holiday advanture took place in December 2016.

The western coast is covered with a wide beach of dark sand where the sea entrance is steep and ideal for swimming. From the southwest to the south are stretching beach with light sands and slight entry into the sea waves and the intermittent suitable for water sports. Unawatuna is the most popular destination in Sri Lanka. It lies just a few kilometers east of Galle. The local beach is made of fine white sand, hidden in the bay. It washes her turquoise blue water is also suitable for snorkeling. Water is very quiet and safe for swimmers for all ages, but it is not suitable for water sports.



One of the best beaches of the west coast is known precisely as Bentota beach, which lies near the river Bentota Ganga. They are surrounded by large resorts, but even this, it is not overcrowded. Laguna provides comfortable conditions for swimming and resting on golden sand, but also to enjoy the water sports. If you are looking for absolute relaxation, you can use some of the spa centers.


Romantic walks and relaxation can be found on a beach on the east coast Uppuveli 6 km from Trincomalee. The convenient location attracts make a trip to the island of Pigeon Island with coral wealth.


This beach can be found on the southwest coast of the island 20 km from Galle. During the day the are is quite, but in the evening turns into an entertainment center. There’s a lot of bars, restaurants and shops. The beach is clean and the water in the sea suitable for swimming, diving and exploring the underwater world and shipwrecks. Along the coast stretch coral reefs.



In the small town of Weligama on the south of the island you will find a sandy beach, which is hidden in the bay, there are very good conditions for diving, and even surfing. Beach is a pristine place, so do not count with colorful services.


Pasikuda or even Passekudah is located 35 km northwest of Batticaloa, and is easily accessible from Trincomalee. It is interesting that you will find one of the longest stretches of shallow coastlines in the world.


Rest and silence in remote locations can be found on the beach near the town of Tangalle on the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, 195 km from Colombo. Diving enthusiasts will appreciate the long stretch of coral reef. Beaches are beautiful white sand.



Polhena Beach is located about 2 km from the center of Matara. It is considered one of the safest beaches for swimming due to coral reef is protected and the water is calm.

Arugam Bay

Cove Beach Arugam Bay is known worldwide as the surf paradise. Held here and the surf competition. It lies on the southeast coast near the town Puttuvil 320 km from Colombo. In addition to the beach you will see a beautiful nature with abundance of birds and animals. For surfers are interesting and beaches south of Arugam Bay – Okanda and Panama.


Mirissa beach is located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka off the southernmost tip. Beach of pale sand crescent shaped is washed by turquoise blue water. You can snorkel or watch whales and dolphins. For active holidaymakers we recommend the historic city of Galle with walls and Dutch architecture from the 17th century and Yala National Park.



Quiet are, located a few kilometers from the west coast of Bentota. Long beaches in this area are lined with tropical foliage and an ideal choice for people who want to escape from the hustle and bustle.


43 km south of Colombo lies the small town of Kalutara with nice beaches that line the palm. Beach is not suitable for bathing calm, often there are big waves. If you would like to see something in the area, we recommend a visit to the Buddhist Vihara building Gangatilaka.


Not too famous beach is Ahangama beach, located on the southern coast of Sri Lanka is a great spot and big attraction for lovers of surfing. It is an ideal place to relax. There you will find interesting temple Kathaluwa nearby.
